How A New Package Helped NGK Save on Cost and Space While Also Having Better Graphics
NGK has been the world leader in technology, innovation, and world-class quality in the design of spark plugs and oxygen sensors. NGK came to Great Northern to find a package that could provide more high-end graphics than their current corrugated box, but still maintain the strength needed for their product. They had been utilizing a corrugated option for their packages believing it was necessary to have the strength they were looking for. With the corrugated option, they were not happy with the pricing and wanted to improve their graphics, while also moving to a cheaper and thinner material.
The Solution
Material
10 pt SBS top sheet and a .030 URB base sheet resulting in a 40 pt laminated paperboard solution
Structural Design
Large, full flap fold-ins provide additional board layers to help with strength in several panels
Inks and Coatings
Metallic ink, matte varnish, and a spot-high gloss coating helped give the package a more professional look
Optimized Shipping
We palletized the packages laying flat, eliminating the need for outer packaging during shipping
The Bottom Line
Our designers met NGK’s needs by using a 40 pt laminated paperboard construction. This laminated paperboard combination provides a high-quality exterior print surface and is also our strongest laminated build for its price. Our designers layered up material in areas that needed the most support and utilized special inks and multiple coatings to create the high-end look they were looking for.
Through our use of thinner material in comparison to the corrugated option, our package has the same internal volume, while offering a smaller external volume. This allows for the same amount of product to be placed in our package while taking up less space at the final customer’s facilities.
