How New Club Store Packaging Created a Billboard Effect for Wells Dairy

Wells Enterprises, one of the largest ice cream and frozen treats manufacturers in the United States, launched a new product line of ice cream bars that requires an eye-catching shelf presence and showcases the new product in club stores. Great Northern was tasked to design a package that would withstand the damp, cool freezer environments while also supporting the weight of the product when palletized without master cases. The package also needed enough structural integrity to protect the product throughout club store distributions. Finally, the graphics had to be of superior quality and stand out to the consumer when in the store.

Great Northern engineered a sustainable, eye-catching package that could not only withstand the rigors of shipping and distribution but also create a billboard effect and attract shoppers when displayed on a pallet in club stores. For efficient fulfillment, custom scoring profiles were developed for the thicker substrate to ensure the carton erects easily and squarely. The package was carefully designed to function successfully on Wells’ newly installed Kliklok automated fulfillment line and erect, form, and seal successfully. Great Northern’s solution also helps retailers, as the packaging makes handling, cleanup, and disposal easier.

The Bottom Line

Drawing on years of research and development, Great Northern engineered a custom substrate for this package that performs exceptionally well to maintain package integrity in cold and damp refrigerated and frozen environments. The structural material strength meets club store requirements and withstands the weight of the product when palletized without master cases. This packaging solution also reduced costs with a new formulated recycled baseboard substrate.

The thinner material allows for more cartons per pallet, more cartons per truck, uses less warehouse space, and uses overall less material, which creates a more sustainable and less costly solution.

The bright, vibrant background color and product image are prominent on all viewable panels of the package, creating a billboard effect in the store. The enlarged product images show what the product looks like inside and out, showing the ice cream and nugget center. The use of the yellow and blue branded Butterfinger colors contrasts well with the white background behind the Butterfinger logo. The overall graphics are accentuated by the high-finish, glossy look of the UV coating that was applied. Also, the simplicity of the images and background doesn’t overcrowd or complicate the carton and gives the consumer a clear image of what is in the package.
