How a Focus on Continuous Improvement Led to a Balanced Solution

HOW GREAT NORTHERN AND ECHO WERE ABLE TO SOLVE A TIPPING PROBLEM

Back in March of 2022, Echo made mention that one of their palletized stacks of product was very tippy once their product was stacked six high at the end of their production line. The product, a leaf blower, is relatively light and doesn’t have enough weight to crush the flaps to make them flat. This creates somewhat of a triangular-shaped top and bottom to the carton, and the effects only get worse the higher the product is stacked up.

Great Northern has been running this carton for the past four years and with Echo being big on continuous improvement, this was a great opportunity to provide a rolling-change solution to them.

The Solution

Using existing print plates from a previous order resulted in no additional costs

Product ships more efficiently with balanced pallet loads

Sustainability

No additional materials were needed to hold the product in place

THE BOTTOM LINE

Using the full cutting die capability of our MarquipWardUnited GGX machine, we offset the minor flaps on the top and bottom of the carton. This makes the top and bottom fold squarely and eliminates the triangular point that the standard single-plane RSC created, resulting in a much more balanced pallet.

Other than the cost of the cutting die, there were no additional costs or materials needed to provide the solution to this problem. The piece price remained the same and we were also able to use the existing print plates from a previous version.
